Product Review of LilyPadz Non-absorbent Breast Pads
By Sharon Trotter RN, RM, BSc
Sharon Trotter has worked in breastfeeding education and support for over 20 years and is a breastfeeding consultant for www.midwivesonline.com and www.babygroe.co.uk
She is a Midwife, Mother of 4, Author of ‘Breastfeeding The Essential Guide’ (consistently in the top 5 best-selling breastfeeding books on Amazon.co.uk ) and a specialist in baby skincare issues (Trotter 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006).
Sharon recently conducted an independent trial on LilyPadz Breast pads. The product was trialed by two mothers, Beth was a new breastfeeding mother and Pamela was nursing an older infant. Both mothers agreed that LilyPadz performed well under all test areas.
LilyPadz Test Areas
The review tested LilyPadz for the prevention of leaking, discreetness, and convenience, cost effectiveness, comfort and safety.
Comments & Results by Reviewers
Beth described them as;” brilliant things” Wearing them for a full 8 hours at a baby show under a tight fitting t-shirt with no leaks.
Pamela described LilyPadz as “fantastic” describing them as; “comfortable and easy to use, I enjoyed the freedom of being able to go without a bra at night, with the security of the pads staying in place and still staying dry.
Disposable breast pads have a habit of becoming crumpled after an hour or so and LilyPadz don’t do this because they contour to the skin”. Both women also enjoyed the smooth lines under clothing with no bulky pad lines.
A recent LilyPadz clinical trial has proven the safety of LilyPadz, finding their use does not create or increase breastfeeding complications. As one reviewer commented “I thought that because they hold the milk in, the LilyPadz might have caused a blocked duct, or at least some discomfort, but they have been fine, and they have not affected my breastfeeding at all”
LilyPadz are also easy to clean and economical to use “I wash them in the sink with warm water and mild soap, and sometimes wash them in the shower.
They stay nice and clean, and I have even sterilized them a few times with boiling water”
Apart from the convenience and comfort that they provide, they are likely to be cost effective too, because most breastfeeding mothers can spend between five and ten pounds a month on disposable breast pads, and since the LilyPadz are re-useable, they eliminate the need to buy new breast pads on a regular basis.
Conclusion By Sharon Trotter
Sharon Trotter concludes that although she initially had reservations, both reviewers thought the product to be excellent and she is happy to recommend LilyPadz as an excellent innovative breastfeeding product. She would recommend waiting until breastfeeding is fully established (6-8 weeks) before using Lilypadz, so that milk supply and demand has settled. She even plans to give LilyPadz a mention in the next edition of her book.
